Germany To Send 40 Marder AFVs, Patriots After French, US Commitments

UKRAINE

A spokesman for the German gov't has confirmed that Berlin will send 40 Marder armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) and Patriot surface-to-air missile systems to Kyiv. This follows on from announcements in recent days of the provision of AMX-10RC and Bradley AFVs from France and the United States respectively.

  • Spox says that deliveries are expected in Q123, adds that training for Marder AFVs takes around eight weeks, and the US will train Ukrainian forces on their Bradley vehicles separately.
  • The supply of AFVs will be welcome in Kyiv, although President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated his call for heavy tanks (such as German Leopards) rather than relatively lightweight AFVs in order to combat Russian forces.
