COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • The United Kingdom recorded its tenth consecutive day of new cases above 10,000 on October 12, with 13,972 added to the total. The UK has recorded 102,117 new cases over the past week, a number that took 75 days for the country to reach from when the UK's first case was recorded on Jan 31. The spike in cases saw the government yesterday implement a three-tiered system of local lockdowns of varying severity in England in an attempt to suppress the virus.
  • France's weekend new caseload of 43,663 is the highest multi-day total recorded so far, exceeding the previous weekend caseload total of 34,780 registered on October 5. President Emmanuel Macron is set to make a televised address to the nation on Wednesday 14 October at 1955CET (1355ET, 1855BST) to discuss the socioeconomic consequences of the virus and take questions from journalists.
  • Argentina's caseload crossed the 900,000 mark on October 12, with 9,524 new case added to the country's total. The October 12 new caseload is Argentina's lowest daily caseload total since October 4. The government has highlighted its concerns about the spread of the virus to the more rural interior of the country, with restrictions on movement placed on individuals in 18 provinces late last week. The country's positive test rate stood at 72.5% as of last Sunday, one of the highest in rates in the world.
