by Tom Lake

COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • The global fatality count from COVID-19 crossed the one million mark on September 28. While the caseload and indeed fatality count is, due to insufficient testing, likely to be higher than official figures report, at present the global mortality rate stands at 3.0 per 100 confirmed cases.
  • Spain's weekend new caseload, released on September 28, came in at 31,785. This is the largest weekend caseload on record since Spanish authorities stopped releasing data for Saturdays and Sundays in early July. The national government remains in a standoff with the local administration in the capital, Madrid, after the latter refused to enact stricter lockdown rules following a spike in cases in the city.
  • India recorded 776 fatalities from COVID-19 on September 28, the lowest 24 hour total since August 2. While the numbers of recorded fatalities from the disease in India has hit a multi-month low, this still represents the highest number of deaths from the disease worldwide over the past week with India recording an average of 1,055 fatalities per day over the last seven days. This compares to an average of 744 fatalities per day from coronavirus in the United States, registering the second-highest number of fatalities in the past week.
