Governing Social Dems To Make Decision On NATO At May Meeting-Reports

SWEDEN

Sweden's Svenska Dagbladet newspaper reporting that the governing centre-left Social Democrats of PM Magdalena Andersson are likely to make a decision on whether to seek NATO membership at a special meeting of the party's governing committee on 24 May.

  • Should the party decide on pursuing NATO membership it will then seek a 75% qualified majority approval in parliament ahead of the NATO leaders' summit in Madrid in June.
  • A meeting of the right-wing nationalist Sweden Democrats' ruling committee on 11 April gave party head Jimmie Åkesson the mandate to support NATO membership. This would give NATO accession overall majority support in the Riksdag.
  • While ordinary party members and deputies will have the ability to put forward their views on NATO membership as part of a five-week 'internal dialogue' launched on 12 April, the party has made clear that the ruling committee will make the final decision.
