Gov't Considering Extending States Of Emergency Beyond 31 May

Jiji Press and Kyodo reporting that the Japanese gov't is considering extending the current COVID-19 states of emergency beyond the current end-date of 31 May.

  • Osaka and Hyogo prefectures are due to request an extension to their SoE's on Tuesday according to Kyodo.
  • Jiji reports Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato stated to a liaison meeting of the ruling coalition that a decision would be made by Saturday 29 May on whether the stricter restrictions in place in Tokyo, Hokkaido, Aichi, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima and Fukuoka would be extended.
  • This comes as Japan records its lowest new COVID-19 caseload since 12 April, although occupancy of ICU beds remains above 80% in some areas.
