Gov't Introduces New COVID-19 Restrictions In UK's Second-Largest City

UK

The UK gov't has introduced new restrictions on contact between households in Birmingham, the UK's second-largest city, following a spike in COVID-19 cases in the city and its surrounding areas. From Tuesday, households in the city will not be allowed to meet up with one another.

  • Comes as ONS figures show the number of new cases in England is doubling every eight days at present.
  • Gov'ts own study suggests the all-important 'R rate' is between 1.0 and 1.2, suggesting the virus is spreading exponentially.
  • Stricter restrictions on group meetings coming in across England, Scotland, and Wales has sparked some backlash among PM Boris Johnson's Conservative party, with a section of backbench MPs opposing the rules on the ground they were not approved or debated by parliament.
