Groningen Production Lowered to Minimum Operational Amount

NATURAL GAS

The Dutch government has as expected cut production on the Groningen natural gas field.

  • Gas Year 2022-23 output will decrease to a maximum of 2.8bcm, down from 4.5bcm in 2021-22. Output will be lowered to the minimal amount needed to keep wells operational in the coming year.
  • The Dutch government will decide by April 2023 whether 6 of the 11 production facilities in Groningen can be closed with extraction expected to end by 2024 at the latest. 11 facilities will remain operational over the winter in case of a gas supply emergency.
  • Tremors blamed on the drilling at the field and an unusually strong earthquake in 2018 saw the government promise to end production.
