Guardian-EU Patience w/Hungary Re: Ukraine Aid Running Out

Lisa O'Carroll at The Guardian posts on X regarding the state of play ahead of next week's special European Council summit and efforts to reach agreement on a support package for Ukraine: "EU leaders running out of patience with [Hungarian PM] Viktor Orban as he looks to yet again block €50bn in aid for Ukraine. Some member states (MS) want to trigger Article 7 which would block his voting rights. Sources - if we give into "blackmail" he will keep doing it. "Frustration felt by member states higher than December" [...].

  • O'Carroll: "Article 7 were triggered, the 26 member states would have to give Orban time to respond, say a month, sources say, but the MS could quickly move after that. Would rely on [Italy PM Giorgia] Meloni and [Slovakian PM Robert] Fico to come on board - they too wd have to decide - national or EU interests? [...]"
  • The removal of voting rights for a member state is viewed as a 'nuclear option'. However, the fact that it is being discussed, even if only anonymously, shows the pressure many EU leaders feel regarding ensuring Brussels passes the Ukraine aid package as-is.
