Gustavo Petro Sworn In As New President

COLOMBIA
  • The newly appointed President, Gustavo Petro, was sworn in over the weekend. Petro is expected to immediately send a proposal to Congress for tax reform that seeks to expand social spending and consolidate fiscal reforms.
  • Petro named Irene Velez to implement his most radical policy: leading the country’s transition away from fossil fuels as Mines and Energy Minister.
  • Velez is a professor at the Universidad del Valle with a doctorate in political geography from the University of Copenhagen. A biography on the university’s faculty website describes her as an activist researcher dedicated to studying environmental and agrarian conflicts in Colombia.
    • “She’s a woman with extensive experience in the environmental sector who will have the arduous task of leading the transition to a non-extractivist economy,” Petro said in a tweet announcing the post. (Bloomberg)
