Guterres To Disclose Multilateral Grain And Fertiliser Plan Today

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected today to disclose multilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, the US, and the EU to restore Ukrainian grain and Russian fertilizer to markets.

  • The announcement will come at the 'Global Food Security Call to Action' ministerial meeting hosted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the United Nations in New York today.
  • Guterres last month pledged to restore the agriculture production of Ukraine and the food and fertilizer production of Russia and Belarus to international markets despite the ongoing war.
  • Wires reported yesterday that Guterres 'propose[d] to ease restrictions on the export of potash fertilizers from the Russian Federation, Belarus in exchange for the passage of ships with grain from Ukraine.'
  • Reuters: 'Guterres has said 36 countries count on Russia and Ukraine for more than half of their wheat imports, including some of the poorest and most vulnerable in the world, including Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and Democratic Republic of Congo.'
