Harris Closes Gap To Trump On Economy And Crime, Ipsos

US

A new Reuters/Ipsos survey has found that Vice President Kamala Harris has significantly closed the gap to former President Donald Trump on the economy and crime, two areas Trump held a strong advantage over President Biden.

  • Reuters notes: "Trump's approach to the economy and employment was preferred by 43% of registered voters compared to 40% who preferred Harris's approach. The 3 percentage point difference was too small to be significant given the poll's 4 percentage point margin of error. A prior Reuters/Ipsos poll in late July showed Trump with an 11-point advantage on the economy."
  • Reuters: "On crime and corruption, Harris and Trump were tied with 40% support for each, showing more movement toward Harris, who trailed Trump by 5 points in the July poll."
  • The poll notes that Trump retains an advantage on immigration, picked by 45% of voters compared to Harris' 37%.
  • However, Vice President Kamala Harris has made a tack to the centre by embracing a more hawkish position on border security and immigration. At the DNC in Chicago last week, Harris pledged to legislate the bipartisan border security bill that was torpedoed by Trump’s supporters in Congress earlier this year.
  • Axios notes she has also pledged, “to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on the wall along the southern border — a project she once opposed and called "un-American" during the Trump administration.”
