Herzog's Office Denies Veracity Of Leaked Draft Compromise Deal On Judicial Overhaul

ISRAEL

President Isaac Herzog's office denied the veracity of an alleged draft compromise deal for the government's contentious judicial overhaul, which the local media circulated this morning and which already managed to draw criticism from a number of Israeli lawmakers.

  • Herzog yesterday told more than 100 local government officials that parties were "closer than ever" to a compromise agreement on judicial reforms. The President has been working behind the scenes to broker a deal and alleviate domestic political tensions, which have recently led to violent street protests.
  • The purported plan proposed either removing or modifying the controversial "override clause" which would allow the Knesset to reinstate bills struck down by the High Court due to their incompatibility with the country's Basic Laws.
  • The alleged draft agreement immediately came under criticism from both sides of the aisle. The President's office responded by clarifying that the leaked document "was not the President's outline," but merely one of the proposals presented by his aides.
