MNI Gilt Week Ahead - April 6 2021: A new fiscal year

  • Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed yesterday that the next step of the reopening from lockdown would take place next Monday 12 April, in line with the existing roadmap. This will see non-essential retail reopen along with outdoor hospitality and attractions, self-contained holiday accommodation without a communal area, gyms and hairdressers all reopen. The weekend press has now turned its attention to the next step on 17 May when the rule of six (or two households) will be allowed to meet indoors (rather than just outside) and when foreign travel may be allowed – although it is unclear where people will be allowed to travel to and it looks as though much of Europe will be off limits for holidays.
  • It is a light calendar for UK events this week with no MPC speakers and the highlights of the data calendar the final services PMI print this morning. With this in mind, focus will be on external events as well as the first three auctions of the new fiscal year.
