House Freedom Caucus Outlines Conditions For Supporting Govt Funding Stopgap

US

The House Freedom Caucus, the bloc of fiscally conservative House Republicans regularly at odds with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), has circulated a statement outlining conditions for supporting short-term 'Continuing Resolution' to avoid a government shutdown after September 30.

  • Both Speaker McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have indicated that they will pursue a stopgap measure and the Freedom Caucus concedes that a CR will likely be required but says the group, "will oppose any spending measure that fails to…"
  • "1. Include the House-passed “Secure the Border Act of 2023” to cease the unchecked flow of illegal migrants, combat the evils of human trafficking, and stop the flood of dangerous fentanyl into our communities;
  • "2. Address the unprecedented weaponization of the Justice Department and FBI...
  • "3. End the Left’s cancerous woke policies in the Pentagon...
  • "Lastly, we will oppose any blank check for Ukraine in any supplemental appropriations bill.”
  • The Freedom Caucus statement is characteristically hawkish and due to the outsized influence of the conservative block in the House Rules Committee, the panel which controls the legislative process in the House, may raise the risk of a government shutdown.
