House GOP Members Voting On Cheney Replacement

US

Republicans in the House of Representatives are currently holding a closed-door session to elect a new House Republican Conference chair, following the removal of vocal Trump opponent Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) on Wednesday.

  • Trump supporter Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) is the favourite to take over from Cheney but in a signal of how ill-tempered and strained relations are within the GOP, she is being challenged by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX).
  • Roy is a hardline conservative, and indeed according to reports his supporters criticised Stefanik's voting record in the behind-closed-doors meeting, but has differed with Trump on a number of issues. Roy voted against overturning the presidential election result in January and criticised Trump in a speech on the House floor after the 6 Jan Capitol riots.
  • The House GOP Conference chair is the third-highest ranking Republican member of the House, and is in charge of much of the day-to-day management of Republican business in the House, as well as communicating Republican messages to the public.
