Household Debt Increases In Q2 On Non-Housing Uptake - NY Fed

  • NY Fed data shows that total household debt increased by $16B to $17.06T in Q2.
  • Within the details, credit-card balances increased to a series higher of $1.03T after a brisk increase of $45B on the quarter. Recall, yesterday’s monthly Fed data showed total revolving consumer credit increased $22B over the quarter to $1.262T in June, although that was after a $0.6B monthly decline in June for its first monthly drop since Apr’21.
  • Back to the Q2 data, the $45B increase in credit card balances led the way, followed by $20B for auto loans and $15B for retail cars & other consumer loans by $15B. Mortgage balances meanwhile were largely unchanged at $12.01T and student loan balances fell by $35B to $1.57T.
