How Can Conte Get To A Majority In Senate Vote?

ITALY

Notable interest in tweet from Sky tg24's Marco di Fonzo indicating the Italian gov't is confident of securing a majority in this evening's Senate confidence vote (see 1402GMT bullet).

  • Says there is 'great optimism' from gov't with some seeing absolute majority.
  • This would require 161 senators. PD+M5S+allies = 152 senators so would need 9 from opposition. Could potentially get 5 from centrist UDC, 3 from pro-EU More Europe. Others would have to be IV (or even Forza) senators voting in favour of gov't.
  • Other scenarios from tweet: PD sources say 155-157 in favour of gov't, IV see 153-155. Both scenarios much easier to reach. Gov't would win but be short of overall majority, bad for stability.
