Hungarian, Polish Prime Ministers Issue Joint Statement On EU Budget

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban have released a joint statement:

  • Crucial comment comes at the end, where it says 'Neither Poland, nor Hungary, will accept and proposal which is deemed unacceptable by the other.', essentially building an assured veto of any Article 7 disciplinary action the EU seeks to take against the other.
  • Both countries at present say the proposals on the table are unacceptable. Also says that their opposition to the inclusion of a 'rule of law' mechanism attached to the budget is long standing and should have been known since 2018.
