Hungary to Protect Its Interests in Future Sanctions Discussions

Sanctions on Russian gas and nucelar power would be disastrous for Hungary according to its Prime Minister Viktor Orban. He said Hungary would try and prevent any moves to do so in the future.

  • "For Hungary, this will have tragic consequences, so we should be exempt from such a decision," Orban said. He stressed that the Hungarian government will "fight to protect its interests."
  • Orban said that although Hungary is exempt from Monday’s Russian oil ban it will not be able to "avoid the effect of a price increase" as a result of such a move.
  • The EU has not indicated that it intends to sanction Russian gas in the near term, having struggled to adopt an oil ban and the current issues agreeing to a price cap.
