IM Bill In Commons Next Week, But If Not Published Door Left Ajar To Deal

Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg has stated that the controverisial UK Internal Market bill and the Taxation bill will be coming back to the Commons next week ( UK Internal Market bill on Monday and then the Taxation (Post Transition Period) Bill on Tuesday and Wednesday) for consideration of amendments from the Lords.

  • This initially seems to be an indication that the gov't is going to press ahead with the UKIM bill, which faces fierce opposition from the EU for breaking aspects of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, and indeed could presage a no-deal Brexit as the passage of the UKIM bill without any amendments would scupper any prospect of a deal with the EU.
  • Focus now on when the bill is published, as before that point the door could be left ajar for an agreement with the EU.
