Income Justice Minister Role Won't See EU Funding Remit

  • MTI report that the incoming Justice Minister in Hungary has given up the EU issues remit.
  • The headline refers to the likely appointment of Bence Tuzson, the current State Secretary, for the post.
  • Varga had handed in her resignation from the Justice Minister role in order to step up to the campaign for European Parliamentary Elections next year.
  • In her role as Justice Minister - Varga had played a significant role in negotiations with the EU on funding issues - a role that will now likely be played by another cabinet member, rather than Tuzson in the justice ministry.
  • On EU funding issues - there remain a handful of unresolved issues here for Hungary: the PM's office see the granting of further funding as a "political" and not "legal" issue.
  • The European Commission had already formally certified that Hungary have crossed the final milestone to grant access to funding, which allows Budapest to invoice the EU from early July. Nonetheless, lawmakers in the European Parliament have continued to call for the Commission to apply more restrictions and measures on Budapest to ensure funds are spent appropriately.
