Incoming PM Sunak To Address Conservative MPs @ 1430BST

UK

Chair of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady announces that incoming PM Rishi Sunak will address Conservative MPs in the House of Commons at 1430BST (0930ET, 1530CET).

  • Sunak does not become PM immediately. Must be invited to form a gov't by King Charles III after incumbent Liz Truss offers her resignation. The King is currently at Sandringham in Norfolk but is believed to be travelling back to London this evening. As such, the handover could happen later on this evening, or tomorrow.
  • Potential Cabinet members include Jeremy Hunt staying on as chancellor (see 1403BST bullet), Ben Wallace remaining as defence secretary (dependent on 3% of GDP on defence commitment remaining in place). Telegraph reports the following hoping to stay in office: 'Tom Tugendhat, a security minister; James Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary; Alok Sharma, the Cop26 president; and Brandon Lewis, the Justice Secretary.' Penny Mordaunt tipped for foreign secretary in return for her backing off from challenging Sunak in leadership contest.
  • Sunak set to come in as the youngest PM since Lord Liverpool in 1812. Also becomes the UK's first ethnic minority prime minister.
