Indian Power Gen to Lean on Coal Imports

Indian power generators will have to import 6% of their coal demand by weight through September as demand outstrips domestic output.

  • India is facing a deficit of 24 million tons of coal in the six months starting April, according to the Indian power ministry.
  • Coal generates about 70% of India’s electricity.
  • Domestic Indian coal production has been hampered by monsoons flooding mines, while increased global demand after the Ukraine invasion has pushed up import prices.
