EU COMMISSION: Initial reaction from the Commission to the UK's publication of
its command paper on the Northern Ireland protocol, released today, seems
broadly positive but non-committal.
- The Commission response states that the EU will have to study the UK's
proposal and continue negotiations. No immediate rebuttal hints at either a
conciliatory stance at the EU level after weeks of increasing rancour between
the two sides, or that the UK has ceded enough ground for the EU to support the
proposal.
- In a statement to the Commons regarding the command paper, Cabinet Office
minister Michael Gove acknowledged that there would be some "additional new"
checks on some goods going into NI from the rest of the UK, while also setting
out an "expansion of existing" infrastructure.
