IOC Chief to Kyodo: 'No Plan B' For Olympics

Reported by Kyodo, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has said that there is 'no plan B' for the re-arranged Olympic Games due to take place this year in Tokyo.

  • Following last year's delay there is a notable clamour within the Japanese gov't to ensure the games go ahead this year. With an election due by 22 Oct at the latest, PM Yoshihide Suga and his gov't will be well aware of the boost to public morale and potentially his prospect of remaining the LDP candidate for PM a successful games could foster.
  • However, it is unclear whether by summer the rollout of the vaccine worldwide will be sufficient to allow the games to take place on a large scale.
  • The uneven rollout between developed and emerging markets could also hinder many nations' abilities to send athletes.
