Iran Has Sent Ballistic Missiles To Russia, WSJ

SECURITY

The Wall Street Journal reporting that, according to U.S. and European officials, Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia, appearing to resist a push from U.S. diplomats to prevent the transfer. The transfer is likely to further enhance Moscow's long-range strike capabilities, which it has used to bombard Ukrainian cities since the incursion in Russia's Kursk region.

  • The Journal notes: "Washington has informed allies of the Iranian move in the past couple of days, European officials said. The Group of Seven nations has previously pledged to hit Iran with coordinated sanctions should Iran send missiles to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine."
  • Bloomberg reported on Sept. 2: "Iran has provided Russia with hundreds of drones during Russia’s 2 1/2-year war against Ukraine, but the potential transfer of ballistic missiles would mark a worrying development in the conflict..."
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy again called on the West to relax restrictions on the use of Western-supplied long-range weapons ahead of a meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group in Germany: “We need to have this long-range capability not only on the occupied territory of Ukraine, but also on the Russian territory, so that Russia is motivated to seek peace."
  • US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin appeared to rebuff Zelenskyy's request: “Ukraine has a pretty significant capability of its own to address targets that are well beyond the range of ATACMS, or even Storm Shadow for that matter,” referring to two long-range weapons supplied the US and the UK/France.
