Iran, Saudi FMs To Meet In Baghdad: Kuwaiti Paper

Kuwaiti Daily Al-Jaridah reports that the Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers are set to meet in Baghdad within two weeks of the Eid al-Fitr holiday (1-2 May).

  • Mohammad Ali Shabani at Amwaj Media tweets: "Outgoing Iranian ambassador to Iraq Masjedi says Iran/Saudi agreed on "framework," next round to decide whether embassies will reopen. Iraqi PM Kadhimi "certain" that Iran/Saudi "close to reaching an understanding"."
  • The previous round of talks between Saudi and Iranian officials took place in April.
  • Reuters reported on 2 May that "Saudi Arabia feels "let down" by the United States in tackling security threats to the kingdom and wider region by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement, a senior member of the Saudi royal family and former intelligence chief said."
  • Relations between Iran and Saudi coming into focus amidst heightened global tensions over oil and gas prices and supplies in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Hopes of a resurrection of the Iran nuclear deal are fading fast as the signatories split along Western vs Russian aligned sides.
