Iran’s Call for Muslim Oil Embargo on Israel Would Have Muted Impact

OIL

Calls from Iran for Muslim countries stop exports of oil to Israel are likely to have little impact, based on Kpler dated cited by Bloomberg.

  • Israel’s imports of crude are around 220k b/d, with around 50% of the barrels coming from Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan - Muslim majority countries.
  • However, Israel has alternative supplies, with West African producers such as Gabon a key supplier, while exports from the US and Brazil are climbing steadily.
  • Middle East countries are a very small proportion of Israel’s crude sources, with no barrels coming from Iran.
  • Likely more concerning for Israel is the security of its oil terminals, according to Bloomberg. Ashkelon, located in the south near Gaza, takes in around 170k b/d. It was closed after Hamas’ initial attack on Oct. 7 and could be at risk of further disruption.
