Israel FM Cohen: Saudi Arabia Visit "On The Table"

Israel Foreign Minister Eli Cohen has told Israel's Army Radio during a visit to Azerbaijan that he is keeping open the possibility of traveling to Saudi Arabia to deepen ties with Riyahd.

  • Cohen said: "This [visit to Saudi Arabia] is on the table, there is no date yet."
  • According Reuters, Cohen also revealed that one more Arab country would normalise relations with Israel this year but decline to provide additional information.
  • Cohen: "The enemy of Saudi Arabia is certainly not Israel. Its enemy is Iran," addiing in reference to the recent Chinese-broker restoration of relations between Saudi Arabia and Ian: "It is precisely this thing that can lead to a balancing act of (Saudi Arabia) moving closer to Israel."
  • Reuters: "[Israel] has made no secret of its desire for closer ties with Saudi Arabia, which has held back on formally recognising Israel in the absence of a resolution to Palestinian statehood goals. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said normalisation with Riyadh would be a "giant step" towards ending the Arab-Israeli conflict."
