Italian Gas-Fired Output Falls 25% On the Year in May

Italian gas-fired generation has fallen by around 25% on the year in May, with coal-fired output down 57%. But hydro and solar output has increased by 27% and 33% year-on-year, data from Entso-E show.
- Italian gas-fired generation as averaged around 6.32GW over 1-20 May, down sharply from 8.42GW averaged in May 2023.
- Coal-fired output has also fallen to about 325MW from 753MW in the same month last year.
- In contrast, renewable output has been higher on the year, with hydro generation averaging 7.31GW compared to 5.76GW in May 2023. Hydro output has also risen from April – at 6.5GW.
- Solar generation has averaged around 4.28GW up from 3.22GW in the same month last year. Solar output has only slightly edged up from April when 4.17GW was generated.
- The Italian June base power contract is up 4.33% at €95.84/MWh – tracking higher prices in the energy complex.
- The TTF front month is up 3.29% at €31.78/MWh.
- December 24 EU ETS up 4.97% at €74.20/t CO2e.
