Jan Durable Goods New Orders Far Above Expected

  • New orders of U.S. durable goods surged higher than expected in January, growing by 3.4% when financial markets had expected a gain of 1.1%. December's 0.5% increase was revised up to 1.2%.
  • Orders of transportation equipment increased 7.8% in January following a 0.1% gain in December. That was driven by a 389.9% increase in orders of nondefense aircraft and parts and a 63.5% gain in orders of defense aircraft and parts.
  • Meanwhile, motor vehicle and parts orders fell 0.8%.
  • Excluding transportation orders, durable goods were up 1.4% in January, following a revised 1.7% increase in December (prev +1.1%).
