Japan LNG Imports up 5.6% y/y in May but Fall from April

Japanese LNG imports in May totalled 4.87m tonnes, up 5.6% y/y, according to provisional data released by Japan's finance ministry on June 19.

  • Imports however fell nearly 7.7% compared with 5.28m tonnes in April which was a rise of 16.7% y/y.
  • Deliveries from Asia rose by 27.4% to 1.50m tonnes, Middle East LNG shipments surged by 212.6% to 464k tonnes in May, US rose 171.1% to 494k tonnes but from Russia fell by 40.5% to 363k tonnes.
  • The cost of LNG imports in May increased 9.1% compared with the previous year to 449.1bn yen ($2.85bn).
  • The average spot LNG cargoes price for delivery to Japan contracted in May 2024 and scheduled to be delivered from the month onward was $9.9/mmbtu, according to a preliminary JOGMEC report.
  • The average price of spot LNG cargoes delivered in Japan within the month of May was $9.5/mmbtu.
