Japan still awaits clarity on the ownership structure of Russia’s Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project.

  • "We will decide on our next steps once the terms of getting involved in the new company are made clear," Japanese industry minister Koichi Hagiuda said.
  • Putin signed a decree in June seizing control of the project, leaving Japanese companies unclear about their ownership stakes in the project.
  • Japanese companies intend to remain invested in the project due to the country’s reliance on LNG imports from it.
