Japan’s Crude Imports Saw First YoY Rise In 10 Years In 2022

Japan’s crude oil imports rose by 8.5% on the year in 2022, marking the first year-on-year increase in ten years, the Ministry of Finance said.

  • Japan imported a total of 2.70mbpd of crude oil last year, data from the ministry show.
  • Last month’s crude oil imports stood at 3.02mbpd, up by 1.2% on the year.
  • A weaker yen and higher oil prices supported the value of imported crude oil, which rose by 91.5% to 13.27 trillion yen.
  • Japan’s LNG imports fell by 3.1% on the year in 2022 to 71.998mn tonnes, while the value of those imports soared by 97.5% to a record 8.45 trillion yen.
