Johnson Faces Grilling At PMQs As Leadership Hangs In Balance

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces the most uncomfortable PMQs of his tenure at 1200GMT (0700ET, 1300CET) today as questions over a supposed COVID lockdown-breaking party in May 2020 put his continued leadership of the gov't under major strain.

  • Sixteen Conservative MPs have gone on the record criticising the PM and Downing Street for their actions, with many more offering scathing comments off the record. There remains the very real prospect that the gov'ts repeated denials result in a critical mass of 55 Conservative MPs sending letters to 1922 Committee chair Sir Graham Brady calling for a leadership election.
  • Betting markets show punters piling into bets that Johnson will be out as PM by March. According to Smarkets this option now sits as the second highest implied probability outcome behind Johnson remaining until 2023 or later. The implied probability of Johnson leaving by March sits at 28.57%, compared to 38.46% for him lasting until 2023.
