July Consumer Confidence at Record Low, Dips Below Pandemic Woes

EU JUL FLASH CONSUMER CONFIDENCE -27.3, JUN -24.3r

  • Consumer confidence dropped to the lowest levels on record in July, surpassing the early pandemic lows, according to the flash European Commission release.
  • Sentiment dropped by 3.2 points in the eurozone (3.0 points in the EU) to -27.0 and -27.3, respectively. The final release will provide more detail behind the fall, following last month's record low assessment of future financial situations and major slides in buying intentions. As soaring +8.6% inflation in June continued to crush consumers’ financial outlooks, outlooks remain bleak.
  • This data comes ahead of the ECB is set to hike by at least 25bp tomorrow. Markets will be paying close attention to signals for a larger-than-50bp hike at the September meet.
