Junts Says It Will "Reevaluate" Support For Spanish Government

Reuters reporting that the Catalan separatist party Junts says that it will "reevaluate" its support for the Spanish government given the new pro-Madrid government in Catalonia and problems with the amnesty law granted to former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont.

  • MNI's Political Risk team noted that the events on August 8, "could have a broader impact on Spain's political stability. Any action against [Junts secretary general] Turull or Puigdemont could also see Junts pulling its backing from PM Pedro Sanchez' minority gov't in Madrid, risking policy paralysis."
  • Reuters: "Turull, listed as factors influencing the decision the new Catalan government led by Socialist Salvador Illa - who is against independence and was confirmed as leader on Thursday - and problems with a law granting amnesty to those involved in a failed 2017 secession bid."
  • Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a statement on X following the confirmation of Salvador Illa as head of the Catalan government yesterday: “We have worked together under the most adverse circumstances. I know about your love for Catalonia. I know your temperance, your common sense and your ability to work. Exactly what Catalonia needs.”
