Kazakhstan Ramped Up Q1 Oil Exports Bypassing Russia

Kazakhstan ramped up oil exports bypassing Russia in the first quarter of this year, as it seeks to reduce its Russian dependency, data from industry sources and Refinitiv showed.

  • While Kazakh oil exports through the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus are relatively small, they have risen sharply since the start of the war in Ukraine.
  • Oil supplies from the Port Aktau to Baku, the main single route bypassing Russia, rose to 163,436 tonnes in January – March, from 28,875 tonnes in the same period in 2022, Reuters data showed.
  • Kazakhstan also sent 104,000 tonnes of oil to the BTC pipeline in the January-March period also supplied more than 80,000 tonnes/month of oil to China.
