Kishida Confirms Election Will Go Ahead Despite Abe's Assassination

JAPAN

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has confirmed that campaigning ahead of Sunday's House of Councillors election will go ahead despite the assassination of former PM Shinzo Abe later today.

  • Kishida: "We must ensure that a free and fair election is conducted safely, and we must not let this incident impact daily governance...Under the resolve to never give in to violence, we will continue election campaigning tomorrow."
  • The election on 10 July is for 124 of the 245 seats in the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of the Japanese National Diet. Kishida's governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner the Komeito Party, look set to retain their overall majority but it remains to be seen the impact of Abe's assassination on the short time remaining in the campaign and the election itself.
  • Kishida: ""He was working for peace and stability in Japan and the world... he was a dear friend who loved this country. To lose such a figure in this manner is absolutely devastating."
