Kishida To APEC: CPTPP Not Compatible With 'Unfair Trade Practice'

JAPAN

Speaking to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation organisation's virtual summit, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida states that the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is not compatible with nations that engage in 'unfair trade practice' and 'economic coercion'. These comments refer to comments from Beijing proposing possible Chinese entry to the trade agreement, a prospect not welcomed by a number of US-aligned CPTPP members.

  • APEC secretariat tweets after the summit that "[Leaders] reaffirmed their commitment in accelerating economic recovery and achieving sustainable and inclusive growth."
  • Japanese gov't has expressed more overt support for potential Taiwanese membership of CPTPP. However, given a number of Beijing's allies sit in CPTPP it remains unlikely that Taiwan would be admitted into the pact.
