Kishida, Yoon Hold First One-On-One Meeting

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida and South Korean President Yoon spoke on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly for about 30 minutes and agreed to boost bilateral ties and keep communication channels open.

  • "The two leaders agreed on the need to improve bilateral relations by resolving pending issues and agreed to instruct their diplomats to accelerate talks between them to that end while also continuing discussions between themselves," Yonhap cited presidential spokesperson as noting.
  • It was the time Kishida and Yoon sat down for a one-on-one meeting, which marks further progress in their efforts to resolve bilateral issues amid common geopolitical challenges, particularly from more assertive China and North Korea. The two leaders previously had a brief informal conversation on the fringes of a NATO summit in June.
