Kremlin-Putin To Meet Erdoğan Following Re-Election

RUSSIA

Wires reporting comments from Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov on a number of subjects. Following the Turkish president's re-election, Peskov states that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to hold a meeting 'in the foreseeable future', although no date or location has been set.

  • Erdoğan's re-election was warmly welcomed by Putin, and could prove important in any eventual talks between Moscow and Kyiv given the Turkish leader's seemingly singular position in the West as a trusted broker by both sides.
  • Separately, Peskov states that the Kremlin has seen the reaction of Washington, D.C., and London to the drone attack on Moscow and that 'we note their lack of condemnation'. Says that the air defences of Moscow 'worked effectively', but that 'work will continue' to improve them.
  • On the unrest in northern Kosovo, states that 'We support Serbia and the Serbs...all the legal rights and interests of Kosovo Serbs should be respected....Concerned about possible provocations in Kosovo.' Violence has been recorded in northern ethnic-Serb areas of Kosovo following the installation of mayors from the ethnic Albanian population. NATO has deployed 700 additional troops to the affected areas, but Russia - as a long-standing backer of Serbia - could be seen to be exacerbating tensions.
