Kuwaiti PM Submits Gov't Resignation To Emir

MIDEAST

Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah has submitted the resignation of his gov't to Emir Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Comes a day after the mass resignation of ministers, after parliamentarians had sought to question the PM regarding the make-up of the Cabinet.

  • Amid an economic crisis brought about by the slump in oil prices as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, members of parliament were due to question the PM on 19 January regarding the make-up of the Cabinet, with many critical of what was seen as the hand of the gov't in electing the speaker of the parliament and that the formation of the gov't did not reflect the result of the December 2020 legislative election.
  • Kuwait's state-run news agency said the resignation came "in light of the ongoing developments in the relations between the government and Parliament, known as the National Assembly, and what the national interest dictates."
  • The Emir accepted the gov'ts resignation and re-appointed Al Sabah to form a new gov't.
