Labour Unions Accept Gov't's 7.5% Wage Hike Offer-Business Day

Business Day reports that labour unions representing most of South Africa's 1.3mn public servants have agreed to the government's revised offer of a 7.5% wage hike, which is slightly lower than the 8.0% earlier demanded by the unions.

  • "The unions, which had demanded an 8% wage increase, embarked on a mandate-seeking process that ended on Friday, after the employer sweetened its offer to win the unions over."
  • The Public Servants Association's Reuben Maleka noted that "we are busy consolidating data and crunching the numbers. But preliminary results show that members are accepting the 7.5% offer."
