Lagarde: "Difficult To Compare US and UK With Euro Area"

Q: Are you concerned that the population will lose confidence given such a sharp revision in inflation forecasts? There is a change in monetary policy in the US, UK, Canada and Australia while the ECB’s approach is diverging. Will this become a problem over the medium term?
  • A: There has been a significant increase in the inflation projections. All the NCBs contribute their numbers, which are aggregated to produce the forecasts. 2/3 of the inflation rise is energy prices.
  • It is difficult to compare the US, UK with the Euro area. Those economies are at a completely different position in the cycle and had different fiscal support.
  • You cannot assume that something which is happening at the Fed will happen at the ECB. While there are spillover effects, we are starting from a very different base.
