Latest Vote Count Update Shows Leftist Castillo Widening Lead Marginally

PERU

The latest vote count update from the Peruvian presidential election shows far-left Free Peru candidate Pedro Castillo marginally extending his lead over right-wing Popular Force leader Keiko Fujimori with less than 5% of votes left to count.

  • Presidential election results: 95.43% of votes counted: Castillo (PL, left): 50.26% (+0.10), Fujimori (FP, right): 49.74% (-0.10). (+/- vs. 93.4% counted)
  • Fujimori has already raised her concerns about potential voter fraud, although and inter-American observer mission has not reported any irregularities.
  • Fujimori is likely hoping that the votes from Peruvians abroad boosts her prospects, with opinion polls pre-election showing her with strong support among expats.
  • Even once the final result is declared a sustained period of uncertainty is likely given how close the result is set to be. Once a new president is installed, whether Castillo or Fujimori, they will face a difficult challenge in governing effectively given they will have the narrowest of mandates, and neither Free Peru and its allies nor Popular Force and its supporters hold a majority in Congress.
