CROATIA
CROATIA: Leftist candidate and former Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic won the
second round of the Croatian presidential election held on 5 January, defeating
incumbent conservative Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic by 52.7% to 47.3%.
- The Croatian presidency is a largely ceremonial position, with executive power
residing with the prime minister and Cabinet.
- The presidential vote could, though, point towards the electorate shifting
support towards the main opposition Social Democrats ahead of the December
parliamentary election.
- In each of the past two elections, the presidential election result has
portended the result of the subsequent parliamentary election:
-- In 2010 a win for Social Democrat Ivo Josipovic preceded a win for
Milanovic's leftist coalition in the 2011 parliamentary election.
-- In 2015, Grabar-Kitarovic's win was followed by the conservative Croatian
Democratic Union taking power in the parliamentary election held 11 months
later.
