Level Playing Field Not Quite Resolved According To Senior MEP: Telegraph

James Crisp at The Daily Telegraph tweets comments that seem to counter the remarks made just over an hour ago (see 0824GMT bullet) by the Irish foreign minister seemingly saying that issues surrounding the level playing field had been resolved:

  • "Simon Coveney has suggested level playing field is done. I am told it isn't by the EU side. But it is in the final stages, senior MEPs said yesterday after a briefing by Barnier."
  • Seems to indicate some lack of communication on the EU side of the negotiations.
  • All eyes today on whether EU's Barnier and UK's Frost agree to extend talks over the weekend. If they do not it could be a sign that a deal is viewed as impossible, while continued negotiations hints towards at least the prospect of a compromise being reached.
