Local CPI & Retail Sales Data Eyed

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The focus turns to South Africa's January CPI. The data will be published at the top of the hour, with economists polled by Bloomberg expecting headline figure to print at +6.9% Y/Y. Core CPI inflation is expected to come in at +5.0% Y/Y. Later in the day, Statistics South Africa will release retail sales data for December.
  • Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe told parliament that the role of the new Electricity Minister would be limited to improving Eskom's energy availability factor (EAF), while he would remain responsible for the procurement of generation capacity.
  • The ruling ANC party told the Western Cape High Court that the parliamentary vote for an impeachment inquiry against President Cyril Ramaphosa last year was premature. The party said that the Phala Phala case could be revisited if more evidence came into light.
