López Obrador: Willing To Resolve Trade Dispute With US

MEXICO

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has indicated that he is willing to resolve a trade dispute with the United States before reaching an arbitration panel of the US, Mexico, Canada trade agreement (USMCA).

  • López Obrador's comments support those of Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard who said yesterday that he hoped a deal could be reached and that "we don't have a panel. It's better for both countries to reach agreement before getting to a panel."
  • Ebrard also said that Mexico would not propose leaving the USMCA trade agreement, even if the dispute did go to a panel, a position supported by López Obrador today.
  • On July 20, the US lodged a compliant over Mexico's energy policies which they claim discriminate against its companies.
  • Reuters: "Under USMCA rules, if the complaint is not resolved within 75 days, a dispute panel can be requested to review claims."
